What is Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy (CST) developed from the work of American osteopath Dr William Sutherland in the early 1900s. He discovered that the bones of the skull have a subtle, rhythmic motion linked to the brain, spinal cord and the fluid that surrounds them - all part of what's now called the craniosacral system.

Later in the 1970's Dr John Upledger, another osteopathic physician, expanded and refined the approach. He brought CST into wider practice, focusing on how gentle touch can calm the nervous system and support the body's self healing processes.

With a gentle, listening touch the therapist helps the body ease areas that may be holding tension or stress - whether from birth, injury, or the challenges of everyday life. When the nervous system feels safer and more settled, the whole body can work more smoothly.

CST is deeply relaxing and can help with:

  • Physical tension and discomfort

  • Stress and emotional overwhelm

  • Sleep and disgestive issues

  • The after-effects of birth (for babies and mothers)

Because it's so gentle it's suitable for newborns, children and adults alike.

What happens during a Craniosacral Therapy treatment?

Each session takes place in a calm, welcoming space where you can feel safe, supported and listened to. We begin with time to gently talk through what has brought you (or your baby or child) and what you are hoping for from treatment.

You remain fully clothed throughout. Adults usually lie comfortably on the treatment couch, while babies and children are treated wherever they feel most secure – in a parent’s arms, on a mat, or lying down.

Craniosacral Therapy uses a very light, non-invasive touch. I place my hands softly on areas such as the head, spine, sacrum or feet, listening carefully to the body’s natural rhythms and to where it may be holding tension or strain.

This gentle approach supports the nervous system to settle, allowing the body’s own healing processes to come forward. Many people experience a deep sense of relaxation, calm or ease during a session. Some notice warmth, softening, emotional release or a feeling of being more grounded. Babies often relax deeply, becoming calmer, feeding more easily or sleeping during treatment.

Each session is led by what your body needs in that moment. At the end, we take time to gently reorient, and I will share any observations or simple aftercare suggestions to support you following the treatment.

There are no set number of sessions, as everyone heals at their own pace. For adults, I often recommend a course of around six treatments to allow the nervous system time to settle, rebalance and integrate, though this will always be discussed and tailored to you. Some people may need fewer sessions, while very young babies often respond within one or two treatments.

Craniosacral therapy can improve emotional, physical, spiritual and mental wellbeing and can aid a wide range of issues / illnesses.
